How to Help - Volunteer

New volunteers are always welcome!!

We currently have approximately 50 volunteers at Dunedin Riding for Disabled, but we always need more!! As we are a non-profit organization, we depend entirely on the hard work of our volunteers to keep us going.

You do not have to have a lot of horse experience to volunteer at RDA. Each new volunteer goes on a full-day Volunteers Basic Training Course funded by the Dunedin Group, which covers issues such as health and safety, working with the horses, mounting and dismounting, leading, and sidewalking.

Areas that volunteers help us in:
  • Catching horses, grooming and tacking up
  • Mounting and dismounting riders
  • Leading horses
  • Sidewalking (helping to support riders when on horse)
  • Setting up and tidying away arena
  • Organising games
  • Meeting and greeting riders/caregivers/parents
  • General organisation and overseeing of day
  • Writing up progress notes
  • Mucking out paddocks
  • Feeding horses
  • Fundraising
  • Administration
  • Instructing
  • Therapy
  • Volunteer coordinating and training

A reasonable standard of fitness is required.

"I love volunteering at Dunedin RDA. It is so rewarding working with the riders and seeing what a huge difference the horses make, both physically and mentally. Seeing the smiles on those kids faces makes it all worth it."  Sarah, RDA Volunteer
